Critical thinking in this vein is the educational implementation of ideology critique, the deliberate attempt to penetrate the ideological obfuscation that ensures that massive social inequity is acceptable by the majority as the natural state of affairs … Critical thinking framed by critical theory is not just a cognitive process. It is a developmental project, inevitably bound up with helping people realize common interests, reject the privatized, competitive ethic of capitalism, and prevent the emergence of inherited privilege.

(2010: 58–59)

Critical thinking would be a way of questioning a history of zombie capitalism and hegemony and offering an alternative view. Individuals could reflect on their own social and political contexts while acknowledging their vulnerability to the powers and corporate interests that threaten to consume them. In the case of many international students, the context they would be questioning would not only be the programme of EAP in which they find themselves, but also the larger context of the higher education industry.
