KYLE was worried.
He wasn’t worried about the wrestling match. He never worried
about those. In fact, Kyle felt happier and more confident while wrestling
than nearly any other time. Before meeting Randy, he’d have said nothing
made him happier. Lately— Crier stories notwithstanding—he felt the
same when he was with Randy as he did in the ring. The tall, skinny (and
Kyle never thought he’d be attracted to a skinny guy until he met Randy)
bookstore manager made Kyle feel that maybe, just maybe, there was a
chance for him outside the world of wrestling.
And looking at Randy as he shuffled into the oversize suit to become
Money-Mad Randy, Kyle felt his worry grow. Randy’s face was pale, and
the guy seemed to jump at every sound. When Jimmy Murdoch banged his
gym bag down onto the bench, Randy nearly leaped out of his skin. Kyle
asked him if anything was wrong, but of course Randy replied that there
wasn’t.
Kyle placed his foot up on the wooden bench to finish lacing his
boot. Randy, having finished dressing, sat staring at a locker. Kyle wished
he knew what to say. After all, didn’t Randy know he was there to look
after him? There was no way in hell Kyle would let any harm come to his
boyfriend. Didn’t Randy understand that?
Just as Kyle finished lacing his other boot, the locker room door
opened and Monty Sneed entered. A large unlit cigar was firmly grasped
between the man’s teeth. Seeing Kyle, the promoter beamed. “Full house
tonight,” he announced. “Fuck, we’ve got ’em stuffed into the top of the
bleachers. Biggest crowd we’ve ever had, and they’re here to see you, my
