Chapter Seven

Hess gaped for an instant, taking in Gilbert’s pale face. He had his arms wrapped around his torso and his hands were clenched into fists. His brows were furrowed and his eyes sparked with hurt and anger.

What the fuck?

“Hess, you there?”

“I need five minutes, Conway,” Hess said returning his attention to his long-time buddy. “I’ll call you right back shortly.”

“You better.”

Conway’s voice came from a distance since Hess was already lowering the phone. He hit the disconnect button, then focused on Gilbert. When he reached for his mate, the even paler than normal shifter took a step backward.

Confused and more than a little irritated with Gilbert’s response, Hess scowled at his lover. “What the fuck, Gil?” he snapped. Then, what they’d been talking about before being interrupted clicked in his mind. “You think I’d bring them here on purpose? Is that what you think?”

“It doesn’t matter if you did it on purpose or not,” Gilbert responded stiffly. “You still did it. I need you to leave. You need to deal with this.”

“Now wait just a fucking second,” Hess began, more than ready to say a few choice words on just what he thought of that. Except, Ash grabbed his wrist. Growling low in his throat, he focused on the lean man. “What?”

Ash ignored Hess’s warning tone. His dark eyes flashed with a hint of compassion, then hardened in warning. “It’d be best if you headed out, Hess. Deal with this.” His eyes softened just a little. “We’re going to call Alpha Declan and let him know what’s going on. We aren’t going anywhere.”

Hess stared into the other shifter’s eyes, reading the man. He saw the backbone of steel, the need to care for those around him, and realized that this seemingly laidback man was actually the alpha of this crazy flock, not Gilbert.

Interesting.

Hess wouldn’t have suspected that.

Jerking a nod, Hess rotated his wrist and pulled, easily breaking the other shifter’s grip. He turned to look at Gilbert. Taking in his mate’s haunted expression, he hated that his touch would not be welcomed.

“I am not your ex,” Hess stated bluntly, keeping his tone soft and soothing. “I understand needing time to wrap your mind around the mate-pull between us, especially in lieu of everything that has happened to you.” He paused just an instant, then added, “I will prove it to you and I will be back, my mate.”

Without waiting for a response—hell, he didn’t even know if Gilbert would give him one—Hess scooped up his pile of clothes, picked up his boots, and headed around the house. He paused just long enough behind a tree to yank on his jeans and shove his bare feet into his boots, then he strode to his Hummer.

Hess sat behind the wheel of his vehicle for several minutes, then returned Conway’s call.
