Chapter Twelve

That afternoon in his office at Good Works, Will sees Owen again for the first time in only a few days, but it feels like it’s been a lifetime. He’s grateful that the first thing Owen does is wrap him in a big hug and tell him everything’s going to be all right. Will kind of wishes his mom or his Uncle Kevin had done just this. Or his Nonna. Anyone really.

“I messed up big time,” Will murmurs.

“We all mess up, Will. It’s how you deal with the fallout that matters.” Owen hugs him closer and pats his back before releasing him. His gray eyes search Will’s face. “Now talk to me. Are you safe?”

“What do you mean? The Molinaros aren’t going to murder me or anything.”

“No, not from them.”

“Oh, you mean from Patrick?”

“Yes.”

Will hiccups a laugh and sits back down at his desk, letting Owen fall into the seat across from him. Owen straightens his tie and crosses his legs. He admires that Owen always dresses in a suit. Will doesn’t go quite so far, usually opting for dress pants and a button-up shirt instead.

“I’m safe. He’s harmless.” He remembers Patrick’s inability to keep his mouth from shooting off rude remarks. “Well, physically harmless. He might do or say something to further ruin my reputation, but I guess I’ve done a good enough job at that all on my own. What’s really left of it anyway?”

“Plenty. You have Good Works to think about.”

“I know.” Will runs his hand through his hair.

“What happened out there, Will? Who is this man?”

Will bites his lower lip, a weird surge of emotion pushing into his throat, making it hard to talk. He’s not going to cry. It’s just so much. It’s so hard to sum it all up. “I met Patrick when I was drinking.” He splays his hands on his desk and meets Owen’s eyes. “That’s where it starts. And it ends where I married him. At the time, it didn’t seem like a bad idea.” It’d seemed like a marvelous, sexy, wildly perfect idea.

“Is he that charming?”

Will laughs so long and hard that tears come to his eyes. Owen stays still across from him, until Will finally calms enough to answer. “No, he’s not charming. He’s an asshole. Except when he’s not.”

“Oh, so exactly your type of man.”

Will covers his face with his hands, half-crying now as he laughs again. “Holy crap, Owen. What have I done?”

“Is he unkind to you?”

“No, he’s not a jerk like that. He’s sweet sometimes, really.” Will thinks of Patrick’s soft touch on his asshole when he’d checked to make sure Will wasn’t injured. His neck prickles with heat. “He’s egotistical and loudmouthed, but he doesn’t want to hurt anyone. Not even me. And I got him into this mess.”

Owen cleans his glasses with his tie. “So where is he now?”

“Patrick’s at the hotel making some calls. He’s got a long patient waiting list and he needs his former assistant in Atlanta to make the calls for him.
