SOLARIZATION

The sun can be a very effective weapon in your battle against lawn. This method, called solarization, is best for large, flat, sunny areas. Mow the lawn low to the ground, then dig a trench around the future garden bed. Soak the doomed lawn with water and then carefully and tightly position clear plastic sheeting over the surface. Try not to compact the wet soil by walking on it. Cover the edges of the tightly pulled plastic with the soil you dug out while making the trench.
