33: Luca

I dropped the doors with a soft clunk.

All light disappeared, then the metal doors above my head creaked as heavy footsteps clanged across it. I crept down the stairs, back aching and eyes blind, using the rough, cool walls to guide me.

Where were we? It felt like Ricardo’s wine cellar—not the one that he used on regular occasions, but the one underneath that—the converted bomb shelter, where ancient bottles lay sleeping in rows, never to awaken. The air here smelt the same, too—dusty and dry.

From ahead and to my left, a soft glow appeared. I used its light to navigate the last two steps. Clever woman—Paige had moved around the corner before turning on her phone, just in case the light could be seen above. The soft glow when I joined her painted the walls a surreal, pastel blue. Ahead of us was a long, narrow corridor.

I’d expected a basement, or perhaps a cellar. Not this passage leading off into the distance. I looked at Paige. She looked at me. And then her eyes flicked up to the trapdoor in the roof and back to the long corridor ahead. There was only one direction we could go.

The walls here had long, rectangular bays set within them. I trailed my fingers along their edges as I walked, thinking about my actions above. The day I’d pulled Ricardo’s gun from its hiding place, I’d hoped—prayed—that I’d never have to kill again. But I’d been ready to fight Bozo and Buffo above. And if that fight had ended in death—for myself or them—well, it was a price that I’d been willing to pay.

The thought disturbed me. I’d sworn to give up killing, yet I’d kill for her? Worse, I’d been willing to die.

“Where are we?” Paige asked.

I focused on our surroundings, thoughts of death still running through my mind. Those rectangular holes were more prevalent here, clustered together so thick that the walls seemed more cavity than stone. When I lifted my finger before my face it was covered in thick dust. No-one had been further than the ladder in years.

Shivers ran down my spine as I realized where we were. It was hard not to think about death in a place like this. But I didn’t answer Paige. Let her work it out for herself—let her have her peace for a while longer.

We walked until the passage widened, discovering a room so old that the bricks which formed its walls had begun to crumble. There was an altar at the far end. When Paige finally worked it out, she clutched at my arm. “We’re in a graveyard, aren’t we?”

I nodded, wrapping my arm around her. “A catacomb, under the church.” The passageway branched at the other end of the room, disappearing from sight. “We must be careful not to get lost.”

“We have my phone,” she said. There was a tremble in her voice.

I motioned to one of the many holes set into the walls. A rat scurried from us as we grew closer; the shadows parted to reveal a human skeleton.
