AFTER… JUST TELL HER
“She’s not going on leave, she’s just leaving?” Summer asked Charlie.
“Yes, I’m leaving,” Hailey answered the question directed at her wife as she flopped down on the sofa next to Charlie. “Leaving for at least a couple of years.”
“Wow. How is the company taking that news?” Summer questioned from her chair in Hailey and Charlie’s living room.
“Well, I’m ten weeks into this pregnancy.” Hailey placed her arm around Charlie’s shoulder. “And we have two little ones already. I just told them I’d stay on for another couple of months, if it takes that long to find my replacement, and then I’m done. They took it pretty well, since I’m giving them so much notice. They’ll find another PR VP pretty easily, given their location and brand,” she added.
“I’m sure that’s true, but you’ve been there forever now, Hails. It’s like the end of an era,” Summer replied. “I left so long ago now. I get updates from Seth, obviously, and you, sometimes, but it still seems like the end of something.”
“I think it’s more a beginning,” Hailey replied as she rested her head on Charlie’s shoulder. “We’ve wanted a third baby for a while now. If I had my way, we’d have an army of kids. Charlie has a limit though.”
“No more than four.” Charlie held up the fingers. “The dream house I built us cannot contain more than four without me having to add to the structure, which I don’t want to do.”
“Yes, and also, she wants to make sure we have enough time for each of our children. That’s kind of more important, right?” She nudged Charlie’s stomach.
“That too,” Charlie replied with a smile to Summer.
“What will you do?” Summer asked Hailey. “Go back to work after a couple of years?”
“I don’t know. Maybe. I probably will once they’re all in school, but that’s like four or five years from now. I never planned on being a stay-at-home mom, but Charlie’s doing so well at work, we don’t need the money. What we’re spending on child care because we both work is ridiculous. This would actually save us money and give me more time to focus on being with them while they’re all this young.”
“Then, I think it’s great,” Summer said. “Lena and I will miss babysitting as much though. We love your little ones.”
“You’ll still babysit. I still want time alone with my wife,” Hailey replied.
“Amen,” Charlie added.
“Eden asked us if we would take her to the zoo last time we watched them. I told her we would. Maybe we can get that on the calendar.”
“Saturday work for you?” Hailey asked immediately.
“Sure. Why Saturday?”
“It’s one of our anniversaries,” Hailey said. “If you could take them for the night that would be perfect.”
“Which anniversary?”
“The first time we–”
“Said ‘I love you’,” Charlie interrupted Hailey. “First time we said ‘I love you’.” She patted Hailey’s thigh.
“Which happened on the same day we had sex for the first time,” Hailey finally got out what she’d intended to say.
