The song was mesmerizing, lifting Frankie out of himself and taking him down, deep into the ocean depth. He was amazed that he could breathe and swim so well. It seemed to be an underwater paradise—at least parts of it was—until he came to a violent whirlpool that looked as if it was serving as a kind of boundary to some kind of hideaway. The ragged, old, broken-down structure was in the midst of a deep, dark, very strange forest where he saw something that looked like snakes. There were hundreds of them. Some even had two heads. Frankie didn’t move, but stood motionless at the entrance. Although he knew he should be afraid, somehow he knew that being out of his body gave him a certain amount of protection. He looked around. He didn’t know how he was going to get past the snakes, but he had to try. So, with determination, he lunged forward and swam as quickly as he could, barely managing to get past them. And then suddenly he saw a sort of graveyard of drowned human beings, their bones piled high. There were also sea chests, rudders of ships, skeletons of land animals. At last he came to a great, slimy, open place where he saw a house built out of the bones of drowned sailors.

Some old sea creature looked up at him as if she expected him.

He looked around, and suddenly he saw Narcisse tied to a stake. Underneath his rotting tail Frankie saw Narcisse’s human legs, and stretched out behind him was the ocean’s depth, churning and thrashing with unseen restlessness. He looked around and saw the sea witch, her incandescent hands and boney fingers pointing at him accusingly. He felt if he moved an inch she would turn the thrashing deep into the storm from hell.

“It’s your fault he’s here,” she said, her voice gritty and guttural. “He’s being punished for falling in love with a land creature.”

Just then Frankie looked around and saw the rest of the witch’s prison. In other cages she had a flock of seabirds. One of them turned in Frankie’s direction and looked at him with swimming eyes that reflected misery and then gave him a sad, toothless, slack-mouthed, and sloppy smile. It looked as if some poor creature was imprisoned within this bird. A lost soul perhaps, without purpose, and waiting for starvation since he was allowed to dine on nothing but the witch’s garbage.

Frankie didn’t know how he knew this, and while trying to understand, his gaze was directed back toward a group of merpeople in another cage. They were desperate, lost, and ugly. Not the graceful, liquid beauties he had thought they would be. And then one turned to him with the slow, jerky movements of an old person, although he was young.

“Have you come to see us die?” the pitiful creature asked.

“Farewell,” said another.

“We fell in love with a human, so now we must die.”

“But…”

Before Frankie could get his thought out, he suddenly
