Chapter Nineteen

“Did you find the rake?” Fifi asked Bodie as she kneeled on her front lawn and planted another tulip in the ground.

“I did. It wasn’t in the basement, though. It was in the—”

“Bodie? Bodie Jacobs?” Fifi heard behind her. She turned around abruptly. And there, stepping out of a black Lincoln Navigator, was Senator Edward Hynes.

“Edward!” Fifi said, jumping up as fast as she could and rushing over toward him. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to speak with Mr. Jacobs.”

“I’m sorry,” Bodie said, approaching them, “Do I know you?”

“No, you don’t. Senator Hynes,” he said, extending his hand.

“Bodie Jacobs. What can I do for you?”

“Can we go inside and talk?” Edward asked Fifi.

“Sure,” Fifi replied nervously, wondering how Edward knew Bodie.

Fifi led them into the living room and offered Edward a seat. “Can I get you anything?”

“No, no, I won’t be long.” He set a metal briefcase down on the coffee table and unlocked it. “Go ahead and have a seat, Fifi.”

Bodie stared down at the floor, his brows furrowed and leg shaking nervously. Fifi sat down next to him and placed her hand on his knee, bracing herself for the bomb that Edward was undoubtedly about to drop.

“So, how are we doing today?” Edward asked in his best campaign-speech voice.

“Fine,” Fifi responded while Bodie remained silent. She could feel angry heat coming from his body.

“Great, great.” Edward pulled a file from his briefcase and tossed it onto the table. “Well, I’m here today to discuss this... situation that we’re in.”

“What about it?” Bodie shot back.

Edward stared at Bodie for a few moments, seemingly taken aback by his tone. “Forward and aggressive,” he said. “I like that. I’d offer you a job if you weren’t a convicted murderer.” Edward opened the file then looked up at Bodie. “So, how’d you do it?”

Fifi swallowed hard, her entire body stiffening up.

“Do what?” Bodie asked, his voice rising.

“How did you get out of jail?”

“I’m out on parole.”

“Oh? Because according to these records I’ve got sitting here in front of me, you were serving a life sentence and weren’t eligible for parole for another twenty-five years.”

Bodie looked over at Fifi. She looked back at him, then over at Edward. “Your records must be incorrect. According to the state prison’s files, Bodie was up for parole this year.”

Edward burst out laughing. “Do you think I’m stupid? I have access to records that go way beyond the state prison’s.”

“Why don’t you call the warden and ask him about it?”

“Why talk to Gordon when I can talk to the man who signs Gordon’s checks? And maybe you should tell Gordon that the next time he pulls a stunt like this, he should be sure to have every single record in the state changed.”

“What do you want, Edward?” Fifi asked in an effort to avoid incriminating herself or anyone else.

“Ahh, I’m glad you asked.” Edward stood up and paced the floor. “See, I don’t have a problem with you pulling a few illegal strings to get your boyfriend out of jail.
