Chapter Twelve

Roland circled the tanned woman as she rested naked, still out for the count, on the operating table. This part—well, when she woke up—was the most distasteful bit. Simon had insisted that Roland do this weird ritual whether he liked it or not. And it was weird, considering Simon would never come into the little hospital and see the fruits of Roland’s labors. So what was the point in doing it, then? Simon would never know whether Roland did or didn’t.

“But he might trick me, come back to the hospital after all, and ask to see the mosaic. If there aren’t enough tiles on it, he’ll know I didn’t do what he told me to.”

Roland sighed. Life was such a dilemma sometimes. Yes, he had strict instructions and was more than capable now of dealing with women who looked like Edwina—he’d dealt with so many he was an old hand at the job these days. But getting the tiles for the mosaic then doing what he had to do to attach them to the canvas… He didn’t like that at all. Simon had said that the canvas, once filled with tiles, would make a good tray, something Roland could use once he’d varnished it or whatever, to eat his dinner off in front of the TV. Yes, a TV tray, Roland could do with one of those, but the idea of having those sorts of tiles on it…

He battled away a heave. Slapped the tanned woman’s cheek several times until she woke up, eyes going wide, her mouth moving beneath the duct tape as she tried to scream. Roland smiled. It had helped to alleviate some tension, slapping her like that, so that her head swayed from side to side, her hair whipping about, a maelstrom of wavering strands that, to Roland’s mind, matched how it would writhe when he placed her in the river.

“But I don’t think I can put you in the river now, though,” he said to her. “I’ve alerted Langham and Manny as to where Edwina is, so my disposal location is compromised. I don’t trust myself going to any other place along the Thames.”

Wasn’t that what he’d secretly, subconsciously planned, though? Secretly—because telling Simon that he’d intentionally given the police clues, therefore narrowing down Roland’s options of where to place bodies, wasn’t a good idea.

Simon would be cross.

Roland didn’t feel the same as he had before. Something was slipping inside his mind. The Roland he’d created wasn’t as confident. Almost as though Simon was creeping back inside him.

I can’t let that happen, but how do I stop it? Maybe me taking all those tablets at once has done something to my mind.

He gave the woman his attention again. She snorted through her nose as she breathed. Panicking—she was panicking far too much. She tried to lift her hands and lash out with her legs but failed. She was strapped down onto the table, no chance of her being able to get up.

Such a shame she looks like Edwina.
