When the first twinkling stars blinked in the night sky, I made my wish, reciting the familiar words as I walked over to Jackson’s house. In my mind, he would open the door and sweep me into his arms, begging for forgiveness. In reality, it took several hours of banging on Jackson’s front door, a few sad love songs, and a lot of whining before I finally got him to invite me into his house.

“Are you insane?”

“Probably,” I answered.

“My neighbors are calling me and threatening to send the police to cart you away. One told me to fuck you on the porch so she could watch,” Jackson said, scowling at me when he stepped away from the door so I could walk in.

“I need to talk to you.”

“We have nothing to discuss, Griffin. I said it all. I’m not getting involved with you. It was just a fuck.”

“No it wasn’t!”

“What do I have to do to get you to go away and let me go?”

“Hear me out. Listen to what I have to say,” I said.

Before he could protest, I grabbed his hand and dragged him into the living room, making him sit on the couch. I knelt down in front of him, taking his hands in mine, and staring at him. It was the first time I really noticed the dark circles under his eyes. I touched his cheek and he leaned into my hand.

“I know a way out of this,” I said.

“Yeah, me too,” Jackson said angrily. “This is ridiculous.”

“Then shut up and listen to me,” I said.

“Fine, and when you’re done talking, I’m going back to bed and you’re going to leave me alone.”

“Deal,” I said and shook his hand. He rolled his eyes and folded his arms over his chest.

“In order for this to work, you have to trust me. Your whole life will change and we’ll have to move out of the state. Also Kieran will probably have to come with us, which means Anthony too. Kieran’s not going to let me go too far away, and really, I like having him around. I know it’s weird, but I’ve been with him since I was seven years old. I still need him, even if he does stuff to piss me off. I promise I won’t be like that with you. I’ll make the transition as easy as possible.”

Jackson looked at me like I was completely nuts. I wasn’t even sure I was sane anymore.

“Griffin? Do you think you’re a vampire?”

“Um, I am a vampire.”

Jackson stood and tried to step over me. “You should get out of my house.”

This was not going well.

“I know you’re sick.”

He whirled around and glared at me. “Who told you?”

“No one told me. Well, Serene told me, because I was upset after you tossed me out of your life. I don’t know how she knows, but you just have to accept that she knows everything.”

“Griffin, I think you need professional help.”

“You’re right. This is not how I pictured us. I’m calling Serene.
