CHAPTER FIVE

CLARE had a bad night. How could she sleep when her sister was hell bent on ruining her life?

'You don't actually think he's serious!' Clare had made the mistake of saying angrily when Lucy told her about this talk of a film test and a part in Denzil Black's new film.

'Lots of people have told me I should be in films!' Lucy had retorted, taking a sidelong look into a mirror on the wall near by, admiring her own reflection. Clare had compounded her mistaken approach first by laughing at her sister's childlike vanity, and then by teasing her.

'Lots of men wanting to date you, you mean, don't you?'

She had got a furious look, of course. Pink and spluttering, Lucy had snapped back, 'Denzil means what he says—he isn't just shooting me a line! I'm going to have the film test on Saturday, so there!'

Clare had been silenced, her face stunned. Lucy had given her a triumphant little smile, satisfied by her sister's reaction.

'And don't think you can stop me going,' she had then added fiercely. 'It's my life, not yours. I'm not a child any more, so stop trying to interfere!'

How could Clare do that? Ever since their mother's death Clare had been responsible for Lucy and the two boys. George Summer was a loving father but he was conventional in his thinking—he had been brought up to believe that it was a woman's job to bring up children and run the home, so when his wife was no longer there to do it he had left her role to her eldest daughter without thinking twice about it, and Clare had never tried to wriggle out of doing what she, too, saw as her duty. The younger children at that time had all needed to be mothered, watched over, cared for-— it hadn't always been easy but Clare had done her best.

Her own life would have been very different if she had been free to do as she liked, have fun, go out every night, live for herself.

Over the years new relationships had withered and died because she had so little free time . Men expected you to have time for them. They didn't want to wait in line for your attention, competing with a little boy with measles or a father in bed with flu who needed constant nursing. Even the most patient men gave up and walked away in the end.

She hadn't been serious about any of them, of course, except Hal, and, looking back at that affair now, she realised that she had never given Hal all her attention, either, so maybe he wasn't entirely to blame for the way he had behaved. She had always been too absorbed in caring for the family to commit herself, really fall in love.

Maybe it had become a habit and maybe Lucy was right—she was still trying to run her sister's life for her. But when she saw Lucy walking straight into danger, how could she stand back
