Chapter Nineteen

inding out about the pregnancy was not the worst part. The worst was finding out that Matteo had sent someone to check on her, to make sure she was “All right.” Luciana fumed. She felt her blood pressure rise to an explosive level. Unfortunately, Maria was close by, and when Luciana was mad, Maria would try to slink out until she cooled.

“Maria! Do not leave this room! I need you to lay out my clothes for the dinner I am attending with Matteo tonight. Something red. Something low cut to show my full breasts. Something that shows that wretched man what he could lose. He will soon learn I am not to be trifled with!”

Maria tread lightly around the room, laying out the clothes and shoes carefully on the bed. As she was rifling through Luciana’s jewelry, looking for a piece that would rest in the cleft of her cleavage, Teo, as they now called him, ran through the door yelling, “Maria, Maria!” He flew into her arms and planted a big kiss on her face. The relationship they shared was a deep loving one, born from the many hours of nurturing and caring for him and keeping him from irritating his mother.

“Oh, my love! Little Matteo, how you look just like my Juan when he was little.” She nuzzled his neck and didn’t notice Luciana’s quiet approach. Matteo ran from the room, sensing his mother’s disapproval.

Maria stood up in front of Luciana and watched, as if in slow motion, Luciana pull back her arm and slap Maria across the face. Luciana watched, as she stumbled backward across the room and hit the wall. She slumped to the ground and almost lost consciousness.

Very quietly, she growled, “Don’t ever, ever say anything like that again! That is Matteo’s son, and I will not hear you say one word otherwise.” She reached her hand down to pull Maria up. With a smile that didn’t reach her eyes, she pulled her close and hugged her.

“Now, Maria, we need to get ready for my dinner with Matteo, and you need to go calm Little Matteo down so he doesn’t bother his father. Lay out my underclothes, and I will dress myself. Come back and help me with my hair, and we will put all this ugly business behind us.”

Luciana didn’t think they could put it all behind them, and she realized she needed to separate Maria from Teo, so a plan was formed as she snapped her red lacey bra. She pulled up her red lacey thong and spritzed Hermès 24 Faubourg perfume as she solidified her plan.

One thing Luciana was good at was bringing people into her circle that she could trust. Her spy at college—her man who befriended Matteo and earned his trust, the one he sent to travel and check on the girl that Luciana needed to eradicate from their lives, was going to be part of that plan. She would enjoy this dinner, and then she would put into motion the necessary moves to secure her husband’s love.
