Chapter 16

Danika

While Cole was in the shower, I took advantage of the time alone and went for a walk on the beach so I could check in with Avery. Now I was questioning if calling her had been a mistake.

“Everything is fine, Avery. The island was beautiful.”

“But?” she asked.

Damn, she knows me too well.

“But things got…complicated,” I said. “That’s why we’re here in Bar Harbor.” I know Cole said not to tell anyone, but it wasn’t like she was going to be talking to Richard. She wasn’t even in Maine herself. She’s still in New York.

“What do you mean by complicated?” she asked. “Is he married?”

“God, no! Do you think I’d be with him now if he was?” I questioned. Avery should know me better than that.

“I’m sorry. It’s just that you’re not talking like yourself.”

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“Usually, you’re talking about your hummingbirds or the lake. But you haven’t mentioned either one. You say things are complicated, but you sound…happy. What aren’t you telling me, Danika? We’re best friends. We tell each other everything, remember?”

I wasn’t so sure that worked both ways. Avery hadn’t told me why she was in New York. Part of me wondered if I should at least tell her that someone used her photo and said it was me. But that would freak her out and she’d demand to know everything. “I promise to tell you all about it when I get home.”

“And when is that going to be?” Avery asked.

“Funny that you ask. Because you can’t seem to tell me when you’re returning to Limerick either,” I said. “Is this about a man?”

“Isn’t it always about a man?” she snickered.

With you? Yes.

“Who is he? If he broke your heart, I’ll come there and kick his ass for you,” I half joked.

“You couldn’t hurt a fly, never mind beat someone up,” Avery said.

That made me flash back to when Mason held me captive. Avery wouldn’t have believed how I fought for my life. Kicking, biting, clawing. None of it was enough to save me. Thank God Cole found me, or I wouldn’t be here now.

“Danika, are you still there?” she asked.

“Oh, yeah. Sorry. Just…I got distracted.”

“I guess so, because you stopped answering me. Maybe I should come to Bar Harbor and meet this mystery man of yours.”

“Oh, I’m not sure that would be a good idea,” I said.

“Really? Why? Are you afraid that I’ll embarrass you?” Avery asked.

That’s a given.

“No. It’s just that…that…”

“You two want to be alone. I knew there was a lot more going on than you have been telling me. You’re in love,” she said.

“I am not. We’ve only known each other a little more than a week,” I said firmly.

“Time doesn’t matter. It’s a feeling. There are people who have been together for years and don’t love each other. And then there are those who meet and fall in love instantly,” Avery said.

“And then there are those who fall in love with everyone they date,” I reminded her.

“Are we back on me? I thought we were talking about you and…what’s his name?” she asked.
