Chapter Sixteen

At nine the next morning, Abby’s sleepy little boutique hotel was anything but sleepy. The chic lobby overflowed with people trying to check out and get help with transportation in the middle of a snowstorm. The concierge, hotel desk staff, and the bellhops lost their New York blasé attitude and were harried. This did not bode well.

She scanned the crowded lobby and spotted Ted behind a mass of people at the front desk. His hand covered a yawn. She flashed a quick smile and joined him in line.

“Bad night?”

He nodded. “I couldn’t sleep.”

Despite her confused thoughts about Ted, the whiskey had relaxed her enough to sleep once she settled. Either she’d drunk more than he did or he had other things on his mind.

The people in front of him stepped forward, but he reached for her and turned her toward him. “My pilot won’t fly in the storm, so we can’t leave, unless you want to try to get a commercial flight.”

“In this storm?” She raised an eyebrow. “I don’t want to fly in this weather, but you can if you want.”

Something flickered in his gaze. “Let’s extend our hotel rooms, and we can figure out our next steps.”

When it was their turn, the desk clerk scanned her computer. “You were due to check out today, and the rooms have already been taken. I’ve got one room. Everything else is gone. It’s yours if you want it.”

Abby turned to Ted. “What do you want to do?”

“Let’s take it and see if there are any other hotels in the area with available rooms.”

They got the key from the clerk and sat on the zebra-print sofa in the lobby. Abby pulled out her phone.

“I’ll call them,” Abby said. Fifteen minutes later, she faced him. “There’s nothing within thirty blocks of here. I don’t know how we’d get to anything farther with the ice and our luggage.” Her stomach churned. How were they supposed to stay in one room?

Ted placed a hand on her arm. “Let’s take our luggage to the room. We’ll figure out the rest when we get there.”

The elevator was crowded. People chattered about the inconvenience of the storm. It stopped on each floor, and they exited on the fourth. Swiping his new key card against the electronic lock, Ted held the door open for Abby to enter.

She walked halfway into the room and stopped dead. Her body flashed hot and cold.

There was only one bed.

If he weren’t focused on the shape of her backside in her jeans, and the wiggle of her hips as she walked, he would have plowed right into her when she stopped in the middle of their room. But he avoided a collision in time. He peered beyond her into the room.

In the middle of the room sat the king-sized bed.

A bed they’d have to share.

This was not part of his plan. No matter how much better he wanted to get to know her, no matter how much time he wanted to spend with her alone, forcing her to share a bed was not his plan.
