CHAPTER FIFTEEN

MAGGIE bade farewell to the last of the tribal women at the door of the walled garden. The meeting had gone well and they’d been enthusiastic about the new school in the valley. One of them had even broached the possibility of a literacy programme for adults. Maggie smiled as she turned and made her way back through the scented garden.

Khalid had already battled hard to ensure that the more traditional local elders hadn’t vetoed the idea of girls attending the school. He would have to be his most persuasive to convince them that their wives should also learn. But Maggie had no doubts her husband would prevail. He could be so persuasive when he wished. Or downright autocratic if the occasion demanded.

A frisson of delicious heat spiralled through her and she paused, sidetracked by the idea of him being persuasive.

‘What are you smiling about, habibti?’

She turned to find him emerging from the shadows. The sun glinted off his hair with the blue-black sheen of a raven’s wing. It gilded his compellingly handsome features and highlighted the tiny laughter lines around his mouth and eyes. She loved his laugh, rich and so mellow it always seemed to rumble right through her.

Her gaze traced his lean, sculpted features, his powerful shoulders and dropped to the burden he cradled so easily yet so protectively in his arms.

Jasmine was six months old, round-cheeked and button-nosed. She had dark hair like her father and a rich little chuckle that suited her sunny temperament. Right now she had the fidgety look of a hungry baby.

As ever, the sight of them together, the two people in the world who meant everything to her, made her heart turn over in her chest.

She watched Khalid tuck their daughter further into the curve of his arm and knew how lucky she was. He was everything she wanted in a man, a husband, a lover, a father for her child.

‘I was just thinking of how good you are at getting your own way when you want something, Your Majesty.’ She lowered her eyes in a deliberately flirtatious move.

‘That’s it. Pander to my fantasy that I’m in total control of my own household.’ She heard the amusement in his voice. ‘But it seems to me that you’re the persuasive one. Who was it that decided we should spend a few months each year here in the mountains?’

She looked up. The warmth of his gaze squeezed her insides as it always did when he looked at her with love in his eyes.

‘Do you regret it?’

He shook his head. ‘No. You were right. I can’t keep you and Jasmine coddled in cotton wool, much as I’d like to.’ He drew Maggie close with his free arm, his lips a temptation to surrender as he nibbled at her neck.

‘Khalid!’

‘Hmm?’

Maggie tried in vain to ignore the glorious sensations his caress engendered. She reached for Jasmine, who gurgled her approval. The warm baby scent filled her nostrils as Maggie cradled her.

‘This isn’t the time or the place,’ she said, trying to sound sensible.
