Fig. 85 Pin templates.
Step 1: Make a paper pattern and pin out templates
On a piece of paper roughly sketch out the heart size and shape that you require. A heart template of approximately 14cm depth by 17cm width will work well. Fold a piece of paper down the centre of the sketched heart measurements and mark a point at the top of the fold. Measure 14cm down and mark a second point to create the heart depth including the seam allowance. Next, draw a swoop of a squished semi-circle from the top point to create half a fat heart shape. Remember that you are including a seam allowance, in this case 1cm all around, so that the paper heart template will be bigger than the finished object. Cut the paper whilst still folded and open out to reveal a paper heart template. Repeat the process to create a smaller heart that fits neatly within the bigger one, leaving a border around it. To do this, measure about 8cm depth by 9cm width for the smaller heart. Adjust sizes to suit your requirements.
Carefully select fabrics for the heart fronts, centres, backs and letters. Remember to consider how to use contrasting and complementary fabrics and try out fabric combinations together. Pin the templates for the two main and one small heart pieces, carefully aligning the templates so that they sit on the straight grain of the fabric and making sure that any directional fabrics sit the right way up. If electing to apply an appliqué letter, choose a ditsy small-scale print or fabric that contrasts well with the smaller centre heart and take note of any directional features in the fabric so that patterns are the right way up once the letters are cut.
