Chapter Five:

Waking Up the Neighbours

Darkness finally cloaked those waiting. Joe, his face blacked out with camouflage paint and his body clad in dark camo gear waited, using the cover of night to his advantage as he crept closer to the Feenan compound. His red truck had been parked at a local strip mall, which housed a cinema and diner. To all intents and purposes he was watching a movie and then eating dinner.

A two-mile hike from the back lot of the mall and through thinly wooded scrubland had him entering Feenan’s ranch, the property about a quarter the size of his own. Moving carefully, he communicated with his crew using low whistles to let them know his position.

The compound had been a surprise. Three large buildings plus the house itself looked to be in fairly good condition. The yard was swept of debris and despite its stark appearance, Joe’s expectation of a pile of rotting buildings was far from the truth.

It looked to Joe like Feenan was making money from his hate-fuelled operation.

Joe smirked to himself. The operation was soon going to be shut down permanently.

A slight noise to his right told him John was close by. Another noise to the left gave away Zack’s position.

He had watched Pace earlier interviewing people on the ranch, inspecting the property and generally making a pain in the ass of himself. Joe had chuckled when the sheriff had used all that bullish attitude on Feenan.

Sure enough, the visit from the sheriff was enough that Feenan began to pack up shop. Shortly after the sheriff departed a whole load of moving about ended up with Joe quietly following as a small group of people were moved from a warehouse near the main house to a smaller structure about five hundred yards away.

The group consisted of about ten youngsters, all of similar age to David from what Joe could make out from his position high above the ranch. From this distance he could just about judge that there were about three girls and the rest boys, plus a heavily armed group of eight guards. Following stealthily along the ridge he was able to find a place to hunker down until nightfall, all the while keeping an eye on the place. Once the kids were taken inside, four of the guards left, leaving four in place guarding the hut. Joe smiled to himself grimly. Four against his crew. The bastards stood no chance. Returning to town after ensuring they stayed at the new hut, he made sure Zack was in place as he went to set up his alibi, making sure he was seen in town. With his alibi secured he then loped the two miles back to the new location.

Joe gritted his teeth as he remembered the obvious fear of the teenagers being held. They all looked too thin, their whole demeanour fearful and timid. So far Joe hadn’t seen any other creatures, but he would bet that they were housed in the other buildings closer to the ranch house.
