Chapter 6
I asked Dor to meet me at the front door at 7:00 p.m. because I had a surprise for him. His big blue eyes lit up with excitement as he asked me what he should wear. At first I froze. I didn’t want to give away the plan, but I also didn’t want him to get all dressed up to sit on the sand and watch the stars.
Gawain took pity on me and helped by saying, “Go for sexy, Dor. There’s no car travel needed for the surprise.” I had sighed in relief. That was still elusive enough that Dor shouldn’t figure out much besides we were eating in.
And I had a lot more than that planned.
And I fucked most of it up… No, really, I did.
I set the blanket on fire when trying to light the candles in the little glass holders. I didn’t even know how I managed that one. I tripped on the tray that I had just set down and stepped on one of the wineglasses. Thank the gods for fast healing because nothing says sexy like a bloody foot.
“Dude, you need to chill,” Emiel chuckled as he picked the pieces of glass out for me. “He’s already mated to you. He’s already said yes and he’s yours. You’re just showing him you care, not trying to rope him into marrying you.”
“Why is this so hard for me then?” I asked with a grunt as he pulled out another piece.
“Because you love him,” Gawain answered easily as he walked past us with another oversized blanket and set it on the sand. “But you forget he loves you, Wyatt. He loves you just as you are, so just be you.”
“Be me, right,” I muttered as Emiel finished up.
“Go shower. We got this, man.”
I gave Emiel an unfriendly look. “You just want me out of the way so I don’t screw anything else when you guys helped plan this too.”
“Pretty much.” He shrugged and got to his feet before heading into the house to dispose of my mess. Yeah, that was fair. It wasn’t just the blanket and the glass I broke either. I destroyed a four-thousand-dollar wine trying to get it open with shaky hands. I was sure there wasn’t an ounce of it that didn’t have several pieces of cork in it.
Dinner was being delivered by one of the finest restaurants around. Sure I paid a lot to have it delivered when they normally didn’t but they were bringing it in the catering van so I didn’t have to worry about getting cold food. Great. So I just had to handle the appetizers. Gawain had been kind enough to run out and get a selection.
I dropped the brie on the floor after unwrapping it, so that was toast. I so wasn’t going to impress my mate by invoking the five second rule when it came to dropping food. My mistake pissed me off so of course I slammed what I had in my hand on the counter… Which was the box of crackers.
