Chapter 10

Vaska could see the storm that was brewing in the tensing of Serge’s muscles. He quickly crossed to Niko and handed him Uri. “Go, take Ana and Uri back to Markus. I don’t care what he’s doing. Have him take the children to Jonathan if you have to. Just get them out of here.”

Vaska was grateful when Niko nodded and did as he said instead of arguing. He didn’t have time to coddle Niko or play nice. Serge was about to explode, and Vaska needed to be able to focus all of his attention on the man when it happened.

This was a dangerous situation, made even more so if Ana was correct. Although, Vaska couldn’t see how she could be. He couldn’t imagine Serge being a wolf anymore than he could his suspicion that the man might be mated to him and Niko.

None of this made sense.

The moment the door closed behind Niko and the children, Vaska turned his attention fully on the man sitting on the bed. Serge’s skin had turned a pale, pasty white. His milky blue eyes looked dazed and dominated his face. He was slowly shaking his head.

“Serge—”

“Why would she say something like that?”

“She’s a child, Serge. I doubt she knew what she was saying.”

Serge shook his head. His eyes were agonized when he turned them up to Vaska. “She knew exactly what she was saying.”

Vaska could see Serge starting to come apart at the seams. He didn’t understand how the words spoken by a small child could have such an impact on the man when his didn’t even make a dent.

“Serge—”

“I’m not a monster,” Serge whispered. “I’m not.”

Vaska debated whether to pursue that statement for about half a second then decided it wasn’t worth it. Serge didn’t need Vaska arguing with him over whether werewolves were monsters or not, not at the moment. His world had just been rocked by a four-year-old little girl. That’s what they needed to deal with right now.

“Would it be so bad being a wolf?”

“Yes!”

“Why?”

“Because…because…” Serge’s lips pressed together until they turned white.

Vaska walked over and sat on the side of the bed. He watched Serge carefully just in case his agonized appearance and attitude were all an act. He wouldn’t put it past the man. He’d seen worse.

“Being a wolf is not horrible, Serge.”

“How can you say that?” Serge gasped. “You’re killers. You have no control over your emotions. You kill without thought. You’re ruled by the phases of the moon. You shift into something not human.”

“We can also smell the rain hours before it falls, taste scent in the air, and hear things from great distances. We have a bond with our families and our packs that is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. We’re one large family.”

“Which explains why Ana’s alpha killed her parents.”

“Serge, even you can admit that there are bad people in the world. It doesn’t matter if they are wolves or humans. They exist. We normally don’t act in that manner, and that was an isolated case.
