Chapter Thirteen

“Well, this is a beautiful cluster of a situation.” Detective Audrey Campbell stared at the plastic bag that Smith had dropped onto the small table in the interrogation room.

Not that this scene was an interrogation. At least, Madelyn didn’t think it was. Honestly, though, she didn’t know exactly what was happening.

He’s out there. He’s been watching. He’s in Miami. He’s…

God, Smith had been right. The monster from her nightmares had been behind the entrapment in the elevator. Behind the attack at her house. Behind Andrew Bryson’s murder?

“Chain of custody is screwed to hell and back.” Audrey tilted her head as she studied the evidence bag. “And if your stepfather already had the ring examined, well, that is just like extra fuckery. A dozen hands would have touched it.”

“If they were professionals, they would have handled the ring and the note with care.” This response came from Tony. Because she and Aiden were also squeezed into that little room. Smith had called them on the way over and briefed them. Madelyn had heard him order Aiden to stay away from the police station.

But Aiden and Tony had already been there waiting when Madelyn and Smith arrived. Madelyn figured Aiden didn’t take orders from anyone, even his best friend.

Audrey glanced at Madelyn. “You can confirm that this ring belongs to you?”

She stared at the little amethyst stone in the bag. “I-I did have a ring like that one.” A lifetime ago. “I don’t know what happened to it. Can’t even remember the last time I wore it.”

“The night you were taken?” Audrey pushed.

“I don’t know.” She hadn’t been thinking about jewelry when she escaped. “I can’t remember. I used to wear it a lot, I know that. But after the attack, I just—I didn’t think about it again. We left. We boxed up everything and flew away.” Her temples ached. “After we arrived in Europe, my mom decided to get rid of all our old stuff. She told me it didn’t fit with our new life.”

“So maybe you thought the ring had just been tossed out by her.” Aiden nodded. “Only it hadn’t been. Perhaps she was even ditching everything just so you wouldn’t notice the ring was gone.”

Audrey’s red nails tapped against the tabletop. “You are a childhood abduction survivor.”

Madelyn looked up and found Audrey’s eyes on her.

“Didn’t think this was important to mention to me during our last big chat?” Audrey asked, voice curt.

“I don’t mention my past to many people.”

“I’m not people. I’m a police detective. And I’m the cop investigating the murder of the man who attacked you in your home.” She pointed at the ring. “Now I’m seeing this shit. I’m hearing that some old stalker may be terrorizing you. You get that this changes the whole course of my investigation?” Her voice rose. “How can I do my job if I’m not informed?”

Smith had been standing near a long mirror that ran the length of the wall on the right. He stepped forward and made his way to Madelyn’s side.
