For those without a yard, their dogs can be trained to do their business while out for walks. Donât forget to clean up!
Fred puffs out his chest with pride. âWhat a dog!â
It is up to you to make sure your puppy learns in a positive manner, not only so he wants to perform the things you teach, but also so he learns the right things.
Your new puppy will be on his way to becoming a rewarding companion and family member when you learn to speak each otherâs language.
I donât expect you to be able to translate that. How can you when you canât see the entire picture? Thereâs so much more to canine communication than sounds. Dogs communicate with their bodies, scent glands, sense of smell and sense of touch. Verbalizations come into play, but they are merely a minor part.
Most people believe that if they speak slower and louder, the puppy will understand their words. How can the pup understand anything? He doesnât speak English! How long would it take you to learn a foreign language? Months? Years?
Puppies do learn quickly, but mostly through your actions. As he learns your actions and your reactions to his specific behaviors, he will learn the words that go with those actions. Unfortunately, if you become frustrated, angry and ready to give up, your pup could respond with fear, aggression or total shutdown. How would you feel if you couldnât communicate with those around you?
Why do so many dogs end up at shelters and abandoned? Because the dog owners never took the time to âthink dog.â To be an effective dog owner and trainer, you must first understand how dogs communicate. Once you can âthink dog,â youâre well on your way to having the perfect canine companion.
