St. Mary’s Hospital, Portland

Damaris felt uneasy as they pulled into the parking lot of the hospital. She wanted to see John but was equally concerned that she hadn’t checked in with Louisa for a couple of days and didn’t know what condition he’d be in. She’d intended to do it at the cabin, but then she’d solved the puzzle box and the shit had hit the proverbial fan, and it had slipped her mind.

He might even have died, and you didn’t even bother to check in on your friend.

A stab of guilt shot through her gut.

Mitch took her hand, and he rubbed his thumb across the top. ‘Hey, don’t do that. Don’t beat yourself up. You’re here now, and that’s what counts.’

It was almost like he’d read her mind, and she was grateful for his words.

‘I should’ve checked in. I love and respect John. If something’s happened while I’ve been gone…’

‘Crap,’ cursed Mitch. ‘John’s alive, Dave checked for me earlier this morning. Louisa hasn’t left his side, and he’s stable. I didn’t realize you were worrying that he wouldn’t be or I’d have told you earlier. That’s on me, I’m sorry.’

Damaris sat back in the passenger seat and sighed. ‘Thank God, I really was worried. I still feel guilty for not checking in but I know deep down it couldn’t be helped. I’ll feel better when I’ve seen him.’

‘Let’s go then.’

Mitch jumped out of the truck and opened the passenger door, holding out his hand for her use as support.

It took a few minutes to navigate through the hospital to the correct ward, and Damaris paused outside the entrance doors. Inhaling a deep breath, she stepped forward, and the doors opened automatically, allowing her inside.

‘What the… I don’t fucking think so. Turn around and leave, you stupid bitch,’ Theo’s voice sounded to her left as soon as she’d taken a few steps down the corridor.

She turned and looked at him, her mouth agape at his anger and words. She was almost too shocked to respond but swallowed her disbelief and narrowed her eyes at the son of her friend.

‘Firstly, this is a hospital, one where, I might add, your dad is poorly, as are many other people. So, curb the language and attitude. Secondly, I don’t know who exactly you think you’re talking to in that manner, but you might wanna wind your neck in and chill out. I did absolutely nothing wrong. I tried to help your dad.’

‘Yeah? Then took off on a fucking sabbatical while he lies there dying. You might as well have killed him, storming in his office and screaming at him as you did. He never did anything but look after you. You stressed him out that much he had a fucking heart attack!’

‘I stressed him out? Not you? Huh?’ Damaris paled, biting her tongue to stop herself from reacting and aggravating the situation further.

‘Excuse me,’ hissed a nurse who suddenly appeared. ‘Both of you – leave. Now. We don’t tolerate this kind of behavior. I’ll call security if you don’t take it outside.
