Chapter Eight
Fucking tease! Even after two days, Jack could not get that scene at the bar out of his head. He just kept picturing Aran perched on a barstool next to that slimy player, their two heads bent close while they talked and sipped their girly drinks. Jack thought of the twentyone-year-old as a kid, but Aran was shamelessly flirting with the confidence of a man twice his age.
Jack pushed aside the nagging voice that asked, and what makes you any different? But it kept coming back and asking the hard questions. I’m different because I’m older, maybe not wiser, but older and big enough to take care of myself if things get out of hand.
For all of a minute he had a pang of remorse about his display in the bar. Jack knew he could appear intimidating, especially to a human. He was a big man, six foot four inches, and muscular from years of working on the boat—not to mention feline genetics. Then he thought about Aran on the dance floor with the blond, and all remorse disappeared. His blood pressure rose to an unprecedented high.
He knew that long-legged slut. This wasn’t Rick’s first time vacationing at TomCats. In fact, they’d hooked up once. Rick was young, twenty-seven, but he was street savvy and Aran was no match for him. Besides, Jack had sensed uneasy pheromones coming off the boy in waves. If he hadn’t intervened, God knows what would have happened. Christ, it made his blood boil.
Funny, he never thought Aran was into blonds, or booze, for that matter. Maybe he didn’t know Aran as well as he thought he did. And whose fault is that? If you gave the boy half a chance, you’d know him intimately.
And wouldn’t that be a mistake? Aran was obviously attracted to him, but if Jack took things to the next level, their connection might deepen. Then what? For sure it couldn’t last. He and Aran were too different. Jack liked the freedom of being on the water, maybe even living on a boat someday, while Aran had a nine-to-five type job that required him to be at TomCats for appointments. And then there was the age thing. It didn’t matter physically. In fact, Jack was sure they’d be damn good together in the sack. But what else did they have in common? Nada. What if the boy was looking for some kind of a father figure? I’d look ridiculous taking a shot at someone so young. Captain Jack is nobody’s daddy.
This whole situation was making him nuts. Thankfully the weather had cleared up and a few resort guests had decided they wanted to take a sunset cruise. Being on the boat always calmed Jack’s nerves. Only a few men had booked the cruise, but it didn’t matter. Jack would have taken the boat out even if it was only himself on it. He needed to get away from TomCats for a little while. He needed to be on the water.
Everything was ready.
