Italian families were close. Cousins were like brothers and sisters. Aunt and uncles were no different than parents and grandparents. We raised our children to respect all elders the same way. My cousin Angelo was no less than a brother to me. In that moment, there was no one I would rather have in my corner than him. I called him to let him know I was bringing Savannah along with me.

“Angelo, inform the pilot there will be one more passenger.”

“You’re taking your American assistant?” Angelo enquired.

“No, the woman I told you about will be accompanying me.”

There was a moment’s silence before he spoke. “Is that a good idea?”

“It’s the best idea. If we are to take our relationship forward, no time like during a crisis to show solidarity.”

“What about Ginevra?”

“What about her?”

“I thought you two were considering reconciliation.”

I scoffed at the idea. “That was never an option.”

“Then you have my blessings, brother. I stand by you.”

“Thanks, brother.”
