As it turned out, it wasn’t just a virus. Gavin didn’t remember much of what had happened after the frantic drive to the hospital. He did remember being wheeled through the emergency room in a wheelchair, but everything after that was a bit fuzzy.

“Hey,” Javier greeted him, appearing at the side of the bed and bending to kiss Gavin’s forehead. “How are you feeling?”

“Sleepy.” Was that his voice? Damn, he sounded like a drunken hobo. Then again, he kind of felt like a drunken hobo. “Head feels funny.”

“Yeah, the nurse said you’d be a little groggy when you woke up.”

His eyes were itchy, and his lids felt heavy. Twisting around in the hospital bed, he tried to find a comfortable position but hissed when pain lanced through his lower abdomen. “What is this?”

“Careful.” A large hand landed on his thigh and squeezed. “Your appendix ruptured when they were removing it. This drainage tube is to ensure that you don’t get an infection.”

Great, that was just what he needed. “That is not sexy,” he slurred as he surveyed the clear tube protruding from his stomach. “It’s going to leave a scar.”

“Don’t worry, baby.” Javier bent over him again, pressing his warm lips to Gavin’s temple. “You’re still beautiful.”

His head felt woozy, and he was beginning to lose the battle with his eyelids. “You always say the right thing.” It was superficial of him, but it was exactly what he’d needed to hear. “Where’s Mom?”

“Rayce took her when you came out of surgery. The doc says you have to spend the night, but I can take you home in the morning. Nothing strenuous until the tube comes out, though.”

“’Kay. We’ll argue about it later.”

Low laughter filled the room, and Javier’s palm cradled his cheek. “I look forward to it.”

He fell asleep after that, and when he opened his eyes the next time, the room was dark but for a single lamp in the corner. Gavin swore he’d only slept for a few minutes, but according to the clock on the bedside table, he’d been out of it for nearly nine hours.

Not surprisingly, he still felt like crap. His head was starting to hurt, and to top it all off, he was lonely. Hospitals in general were just depressing, and sitting alone in the dark wasn’t helping. He’d paid for Javier’s services, so why wasn’t the man servicing him?

The unintentional innuendo caused him to chuckle at his own hilarity, but the laughter quickly turned to a moan of pain when his stomach muscles clenched. Minimally invasive surgery, my ass. They’d removed an organ. That sounded pretty fucking invasive to him.

“You’re awake.” Javier hurried to the bed with a bright smile on his face. “How are you feeling?”

“Head hurts, and I think I’m hungry.” He wasn’t sure, though. It was an odd feeling, like he was hungry and nauseous all at the same time. “How did you get in here?” As far he knew, only family or spouses were allowed after visiting hours.
