Nicky smiled as he watched the kids dig into the food that had been prepared for them. The way they ate made Nicky wonder if it had been just a few days since they ate like Zander had said. They were eating as though they thought the food might be taken away from them.

While he had never starved, Nicky could understand where they were coming from on some level. The fear of losing something could be overwhelming at times.

Growing up, Nicky’s stepfather had made his life a living hell. Learning to not let Frank know he liked something became a way of life for Nicky by the time he was five. Frank tried to destroy everything good in his life.

Nicky swore he would never let something like that touch these three kids, even if he had to make it a law throughout the entire universe. He just wondered if he could do something like that. Everyone kept telling him he was king of the universe and he could have whatever or whoever he wanted. Maybe it was time for him to flex his royal muscles.

“Baylor,” Nicky called out when he saw the man walk into the room. “Has there been any word from Cooper?”

“No, Your Highness.”

Nicky frowned. It wasn’t like Cooper to be out of contact for so long. “Cooper?” he asked through their bond. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

The response was immediate and terse, almost cold. It wasn’t something he expected from his mate. Not even before they had become mates. Cooper was never short with him. He had the patience of a saint.

“Is everything okay, Cooper?”

“Everything is fine, Nicky. I’m just in the middle of something. Now is not a good time.”

“Oh.” Nicky pressed his lips together. “Sorry.”

He waited for Cooper to say more but nothing came through their bond. Nicky hesitated to say anything because he didn’t want to bother Cooper, but not knowing what was going on was driving him nuts.

“Are you sure everything is okay, Cooper?”

“Yes,” Cooper came back sharply. “I need to go. I’ll contact you when I can.”

“Okay.” Nicky glanced toward the viewing port when he felt tears flood his eyes. He didn’t want anyone else to see him cry. It didn’t look good on a king.

“Your Highness?”

“Cooper says he’ll contact us when he can.” Nicky said it just low enough that only Baylor would hear him. He still didn’t think it was a good idea for others to know of the special bond he had with Cooper, even if most of his Royal Guards already did.

“I understand, Your Highness.”

Nicky’s smile was weak, but it was all he had at the moment. A knot of ice had formed in the pit of his stomach and he couldn’t seem to thaw it out. Something had happened to Cooper. He just knew it.

Baylor seemed to understand what Nicky wasn’t saying. His grip was gentle as he grabbed Nicky’s elbow and started steering him back across the room. “Why don’t we get the children settled and then you can get some rest, King Nicolas.
