Chapter Five
Carney stared at his younger brother, Sebastian, who stood next to him in the clearing. “What the hell is going on, Seb?”
Seb sneered down at him. “You seriously have no idea? Didn’t you pay any attention to the lessons Dad and Mom taught us?”
He shrugged. “Not the ones when we went out into the woods. Why would I need to know how to hunt and track?”
“So you can carry on the family legacy, dumbass.” Seb nudged Carney’s foot with his boot.
“What family legacy? Why am I sitting here? Where’s Ivan?” Carney could hear his voice getting higher and higher as he asked.
“The Fergusons are hunters. Dad’s clan and Mom’s family were well-known for being the best at trapping and killing unicorns.”
Seb’s prideful boast tore into Carney’s heart like a lead bullet.
“Oh my God. You’re kidding me.” Carney shot to his feet, ready to run. He needed to find Ivan and explain he had nothing to do with this.
He cried out in pain when Seb grabbed his arm then twisted it behind him.
“You’ll sit right here. We’re waiting for the others to drive the beast to us. Because he’ll be in his shifted form, once he sees you, it’ll be like shooting fish in a barrel.” Seb smirked.
Carney dropped to his knees, the pain in his shoulder and wrist overwhelming him. “You’re crazy. You’re talking about murdering someone. Ivan isn’t an animal. He’s a person.”
Seb gave Carney’s arm a slight jerk, and the resulting stab of agony shot through him, stealing his breath away. “He’s an animal. All those freaks that can change shape are abominations in the eyes of God.”
“So is this,” Carney murmured as he let his chin drop forward to rest on his chest. He bit back a whimper when Seb let go of his arm.
“You were always the weakest of us, Carney. Why do you think our parents chose not to tell you about our plans? They knew you wouldn’t be part of it, but they needed someone to be the bait. So they kept you in the dark and kept you innocent. They let you go out on your birthday because it was the right time. Jessica had just killed her first deer. We were all ready for the ultimate hunt—just needed our prey.” Seb patted Carney on the head. “You did your job remarkably well. I wasn’t sure you’d be able to attract anyone, much less the lead stallion of the local unicorn herd.”
The ache in his arm didn’t even begin to touch the pain in his heart. He knew the legends of unicorns being trapped using virgins as bait, but he never thought his own family would use him like that.
“That’s why they let me go out by myself. They were hoping I’d cross paths with Ivan,” he said.
“Him or one of the other herd members. They weren’t particular when they first started this. Then they saw Brusilov drop you off and knew you’d bagged the biggest trophy of them all. A lead unicorn stallion’s horn is far more powerful than a normal one.
