first trout, his whole ambition being to succeed first time. Little by little, the noose made its way forward over the body of the fish as it moved gently in the slight current, and then at last it was in place. A jerk, and there lay the fish in the grass beside him, twitching. Listener killed it with the back of his knife, and then tried again, proud to have had such luck with his first catch. Obviously fishermen seldom came here, for the trout were not timid, and he soon had a second fish in his noose. He gutted both trout and carried them over to the wood where he had decided to spend the night. Kindling a fire with his flint and steel, he spitted the fish on slender willow wands, and roasted them over the embers. The aroma rose so pleasantly to his nostrils that he could hardly wait for the trout to be done. He ate them ravenously, and would have sworn they were the most delicious fish he ever tasted.
