Chapter Four
Evin put the phone down with a sigh. He’d spent most of the morning trying to find a producer who’d be interested in his pitch for Gold, Frankincense and Merv, but it seemed no one was in the market for a Christmas comedy. Or maybe he was stuck in a queue of writers who’d all had their sights on writing for Roddy Belafonte and been knocked back just the way he had, and were now trying to find a new home for their script.
It didn’t help that he couldn’t stop thinking about Jack, and not just the feel of those sensuous lips wrapped around his cock, or the way Jack had looked with his hand busy on his own dick as he’d brought Evin to such a gushing climax. Why had he disappeared so soon after they’d both come? His parting words suggested the two of them would be together again…but when, and how? He couldn’t keep sneaking onto the Monument Studios lot every time he wanted to see Jack, but if his ghost really was tethered to the place where he’d died, Evin saw no other choice.
What he needed was a cup of coffee. He always thought better after a jolt of caffeine. But when he opened the fridge and reached for the packet of ground coffee—Rob had stored it there, claiming it kept the coffee fresh for longer, and somehow he’d never quite been able to break the habit—it was all but empty. How had he let his supplies get so low?
It meant a trip to the corner store for more, and maybe some of their three-bean salad from the deli counter for lunch. Repeated disappointments really sharpened the appetite, he thought, picking his keys up from the kitchen counter.
Trying to decide between French Roast and Colombian, he didn’t hear his name being called at first.
“Hey, Evin, how’s it going?”
Evin turned to see Red smiling at him. He hoped a guilty flush didn’t come to his face as he remembered the way he’d been admiring the man’s boyfriend as he’d cleaned his car. Though maybe Red was used to other men lusting after Gilson—looking but not being able to touch. “Oh, hi, Red. Yeah, keeping busy… You know how it is.”
Red went to dump his groceries down on the counter, adding a packet of gum from a display by the till to the pile. “I was kinda hoping I’d bump into you,” he said as the clerk rang his purchases up. “Gilson and I are throwing a party on Saturday night. Kind of a belated housewarming. We’d love you to come—if you don’t have any other plans, that is.”
“Sure, that’d be great.”
Red picked up his bag of groceries, unwrapping the gum and popping a piece into his mouth. He offered the pack to Evin, who declined. Grinning, he said, “I’ve just given up smoking, and I kinda need to give my mouth something to do. Didn’t know how hard it would be to quit. Anyway, see you Saturday.
