In another part of the capital city…the interior of the seedy club was dim, probably to help hide whatever sticky filth was all over the floor. It smelled of stale beer and strange, unidentifiable odors.

Looking around, Phineas spotted a man in the corner. For a long moment, he simply stood there, watching the stranger. When the guy looked up, their eyes met. That’s when he knew the stranger sitting in the corner was the man he was looking for. Walking towards the table, he sat down across from the stranger, still wary. This anonymity crap was a pain in the ass!

“You don’t look like a Phineas, the man sitting at the table grumbled. He shifted the mug of cheap ale around, then forced his fingers to still.

Phineas sat down on the opposite side of the table. “And you’re supposed to be Diniean?”

The tired, irritated waitress arrived at the table with a pained smile and a whole lot of skin showing. Not enough skin, in “Phin’s” opinion, but he wasn’t here to ogle the staff.

“What can I get you gentlemen?” the waitress asked, leaning back instead of forward. Didn’t matter. Her breasts were still on display due to the tiny, barely-there sparkly bikini top.

“I’ll have a gin and tonic,” Phin said, then ignored the woman.

The waitress looked at Diniean. “And would you like a refill?”

“Nah,” the other guy mumbled. “I’m good.”

The waitress shrugged and turned, acting like she hadn’t a care, or a thought, in her head as she returned to the bar to get the new drink.

“So, what the hell happened?” Phineas demanded once they were alone. “Why don’t we have the dagger already?”

“Because Hassan, the idiot you hired to steal the dagger, got nabbed!”

Phineas sighed, rubbing a frustrated hand over his face. “Yeah, well, he looked like the right kind of guy on paper.”

“Your paper was wrong. Apparently, he owes some guy a whole lot of money. Gambling.”

“Phin” grunted, irritated by the news. “Whatever. So, what’s the plan now? Where is the dagger?”

“That’s the thing,” Diniean snapped. “We don’t know where the damn dagger is!”

That wasn’t good. He thought for a moment, then shrugged. “Well, then why not get something else? Something that will work just as effectively as that stupid dagger? All we need is an issue that will create distrust in Sheik al Bodari’s authority.” He ran a hand impatiently through his hair and leaned forward, furious at Diniean’s incompetence. “I thought you said you had a connection high up in the palace hierarchy! Why not just call them up and ask what’s going on?”

Diniean took a long swallow of his ale. “Because that’s not how this works!”

Phineas started to speak, but the waitress came over, delivering his gin and tonic. “Would you boys like to start a tab?” She glanced tiredly at Diniean. “Or are you here for just one drink?”

Phineas pulled out his wallet and gave her some cash. He couldn’t pay by credit card, unwilling to leave a financial trail of where he’s been.
