Chapter 10

THE On-Purpose Tourists

“All really great flying adventures begin at dawn.”

―Stephen Coonts, The Cannibal Queen: A Flight into the Heart of America

“What…” Jenna began, yawning as she straggled into the kitchen, running a hand through her messy, auburn bedhead. She was wearing one of Caspian’s long, Navy-branded T-shirts and probably nothing else.

Henry, shoveling scrambled eggs out of the fancy frying pan Jenna and Caspian had bought for the house but never used, grinned at his still-half-asleep roomie as she tried and failed to cover her entire yawn with her slim and apparently smaller-than-her-mouth hand.

Then she was staring at the kitchen table in a daze, her round, hazel-gray eyes wide and starry. “What in the bloody hell is all this?”

Henry followed Jenna’s gaze to the table, which was covered in breakfast foods—a plate piled fairly high with nearly all the bacon they had, two big mugs of coffee, a tall and haphazard stack of buckwheat flapjacks, two plates already sporting fairly large portions of scrambled eggs, and last, but not least, Henry’s homemade, seasoned home fries, mixed with sliced onions and bits of green pepper.

Looking up, Henry shrugged. “Breakfast,” he said dismissively, dishing up the last of the eggs—cheesy, oniony, peppery, and sriracha-y—and turning to deposit the pan on the stove for dealing with later. Then he moved the rest of the other prep and cooking materials to the sink. “It’s the most important meal of the day, or so I’ve heard.”

Jenna yawned again from the sound, then scraped out a chair, making ready to sit.

“Please tell me you’re wearing underwear,” Henry said, glancing over his shoulder as Jenna, halfway to sitting, froze. She straightened, her face pink as she pushed her usual chair back and flashed Henry a winning, if sleepy grin.

“Right. So, I’m just going to wake Caspian before I, er, tuck into this lovely breakfast, shall I?”

“You do that,” Henry agreed indulgently, but rolled his eyes as he sat in his own customary spot.

Five minutes later, still wearing Caspian’s T-shirt and a pair of cut-off jeans, Jenna bounced back into the kitchen, clearly more awake.

Caspian, very much not a morning person, stumbled after, muttering to himself and rubbing his unshaven jaw. His eyes were barely open, and only partly because of the eastern exposure of the kitchen windows painting the room sunrise-orange and rose-gold. He was wearing one of Jenna’s retro band T-shirts, this one bearing the cover of ELO’s album Out of the Blue, and a pair of sweatpants that bagged and sagged on his slim frame.

Henry—also normally not a morning person—flashed his dimples at his roommate and swept out a welcoming hand. “Mornin’, sunshine! Pop a squat and dig in. Everything’s still steaming hot.”

“Just the way Jenna likes it!” Jenna sat and immediately helped herself to bacon.

Caspian, still muttering, did the same, only he helped himself to pancakes first.

“Y’know, I could put on a pot of coffee for ya, Cas,” Henry offered, snagging a piece of bacon before helping himself to the home fries.

Caspian, now staring at the pile of bacon as if he’d never before seen its like, grunted.
