Imagery

Performers often report using mental imagery during the performance of a written out composition. The imagery tends to be multi-modal and dependent on individual preferences. Some performers’ mental image is reflective of their physical movements developed during repeated practice, or an image of the score; some may focus on their inner hearing, “picturing” the sound ahead of producing it while others prefer metaphorical or emotional images. Such extra-musical analogies can aid the processing of the memory-intensive task of performance (Maes, Giacofci & Lehman, 2005; Saintilan, 2015).

Keller (2012) has focussed attention on the multidimensional and multi-modal representation of music. This shows the complex interaction between various musical skills (theoretical, aural, kinaesthetic, motor), level of expertise, and personal preferences for internal models. The use of mechanisms such as action simulation, inner hearing, and visual imagery facilitates planning and execution.

All this confirms that given the multitude of cognitive and motor skills involved when performing written music, at every stage from sight-reading to memorization performance is considerably aided by a comprehensive approach utilizing the musician’s full armoury of varied skills and knowledge base.
