Chapter Nine

Robby pulled the edges of his hood farther around his face, trying to block the cold. He knew it would warm up once the sun came up, but currently it was freezing out. Taking off when it was this cold was pretty stupid, but he refused to stay where he wasn’t wanted and he knew Moose no more wanted him than Gus did.

It seemed no one wanted him.

Fine. Robby had been taking care of himself for a very long time. He could continue to do so. He didn’t need Gus or Moose or anyone else. He was perfectly capable of adulting all by himself. He might not be perfect at it, but he was a survivor.

He just needed a place to start. He briefly considered going to the café where his brother’s boyfriend worked, but there was too much of a chance Moose or Cory could be there, and he really didn’t want to deal with either man right now.

Gus’s place was obviously out. The man wanted him gone so bad he was practically frothing at the mouth. That meant Gus’s store was also out as well. That was probably the first place they would look for him. Assuming anyone looked for him. Maybe they were tired of him enough to wash their hands of him.

Everyone else had.

Robby’s heart jumped into his throat when he heard a vehicle approaching. He knew the sound of that engine. There was no mistaking it. He had been hearing it every day and night for years. It was only when the sound faded that Robby knew he could breathe again.

But it also meant Billy was still in town.

Robby needed to find a place to hide, and he needed to find it now. With Billy out and about, Robby was sure to be caught if he stayed out in the open. Billy was a lot of things, but he wasn’t stupid. Robby had no doubt that Billy knew Robby’s testimony could put him, Barry, and Kevin away for a lot of years. He would keep searching until he found Robby.

The faster Robby walked, the more anxiety welled up inside of him. By the time he got to the end of the block, he was practically running. He just didn’t know where to run to.

Robby spotted lights off in the distance. Bright lights. He headed in that direction. Lights meant people, right? Maybe there would be someone there who could help him.

By the time he reached the lights, Robby was shaking so bad he was afraid he was going to collapse right where he stood…on the front steps of a church?

Robby almost turned around and walked away, but something compelled him to open the door. He should have been surprised the door was unlocked, considering he would never leave his door unlocked, but for some odd reason, he just wasn’t.

Robby walked inside and closed the door. He realized he stood inside some sort of entryway. There were two sets of double doors in front of him and hallways to either side.
