CHAPTER NINE

FATHER AND SON STARED at each other. Alex sipped some more tea. She figured even she might have flinched under Colin’s steel-blue gaze, but Sean just scowled right back.

“Mind telling me,” Colin said, “what you’re doing here?”

Sean didn’t answer. He did, however, deliberately eat a French fry. Alex saw the frustration in Colin’s eyes. For once, she was genuinely glad not to be a parent.

“Well,” she murmured, scooting to the edge of the seat, “I guess I’ll be leaving...”

Sean gave her a look that stated, plain and clear, Hey, don’t go. Please.

The last thing she wanted was to get caught in a confrontation between Colin McIntyre and his son. Any problems they had were their business, not hers. But then Colin glanced at her.

“Got room for me?” he asked.

She scooted to the far side of the bench. “Sure,” she said lamely.

Colin slid in beside her. Now both of them were facing Sean...and Alex didn’t have any avenue of escape.

Colin nodded at the apple cobbler and ice cream. “Seems nobody’s going to eat that.”

Sean gazed at the cobbler, too, then pushed it over toward his father.

Colin took a bite. “Not bad.”

Given the hint of uncertainty in Sean’s expression, he’d probably expected to be yelled at. But Colin wasn’t doing any yelling. Instead he went on eating cobbler and ice cream.

“Guess you’re still trying to prove a point,” Colin told his son at last. “You got Herb hooked on the computer, then you just walked out on him.”

“What’s the big deal?” Sean muttered.

“The big deal is that Herb trusted you. I trusted you, too.”

“You’re the one trying to prove some stupid point. Why don’t you just lock me up somewhere?”

There was something about teenagers, Alex reflected. One minute you felt sorry for them; the next they drove you nuts. At this particular moment, Alex wasn’t feeling sympathetic. Colin, however, showed admirable restraint. He finished the dessert, and only then did he speak.

“Hmm, lock you up somewhere. Interesting idea. But I have one that’s even better.”

Sean looked suspicious. “What?”

“You’ll see,” Colin said enigmatically. “It isn’t a bad idea...not a bad idea at all.”

Now Sean looked uneasy. Meanwhile, Colin had the embattled appearance of someone who’d won the first round but wasn’t at all sure about the second.

Alex couldn’t say she envied him.
