chapter Twenty-Six
The call of peacocks and cooing of peahens in the lawn outside brought Larken into full awareness. It was barely dawn. They were cuddled together on River’s bed. River’s platinum hair lay fanned out across Larken’s chest and the scent of it was comforting to her. She realized how much she had come to feel about River in the short time they’d known one another. Last night had been the culmination of the growing feelings between them. It frightened Larken, while making her heart soar at the same time. Sudden thoughts of Minorca intruded, causing her chest to constrict. Would he take River from her? How deep was their involvement?
River stirred and lifted her head to gaze sleepily at Larken.
“Hi. What time is it?”
“Good morning. Early. Not yet light.”
River tucked her head. “God, you must think I’m horrible after last night.”
Larken chuckled and kissed River’s hair. “No, baby. I think you’re wonderful. Why would you think otherwise?”
“The way I acted. I’ve never…been like that before.” She sat and pulled the sheet up to cover her nakedness.
“I’ll take that as a compliment.” She paused a long beat before continuing. “I’m glad you let me love you. I was so afraid but wanted you in my arms so badly.”
“So, we’re okay?” She peeked at Larken from the parted curtain of her hair.
“Oh, yeah. Very okay. But I have to tell you, being together last night really threw me too,” she confessed. “I’d never reacted to anyone quite that way before.”
River smiled in the dimness, one finger idly plucking at the tight flesh of Larken’s arm. “Is that why you were so mean to me that first day? Because you were afraid of me? I thought it was because you plain didn’t like me.”
Larken smoothed her hair. “Yeah, I guess I was overcompensating for the attraction. I’m sorry I was so mean.”
Dark thoughts invaded Larken’s mind but she pushed them away, reluctant to spoil the bliss of their time together.
“I’ll forgive you if you’ll tell me you like my necklace,” River cajoled, fingering the heavy necklace still draped around her neck.
Larken turned on her side so she was facing River. Her warm breath fanned across River’s eyes. “I do like your necklace. I like all your necklaces and you know what?”
“What?”
“I like you. God help me, even though I know better.”
River bristled. “Why? What do you mean?”
Larken’s hand crept low on her stomach, stopping to cup the softly furred mound of River’s womanhood in one strong hand. Gently she moved the hand until the other’s breathing increased and the question was swept away.
“Now we’ll take our time,” she whispered against soft lips. “Touch me, River.”
River touched her, opening the door to another dimension where passion reigned supreme.
