“Mitchell, I heard that you have some…advantageous…business opportunities,” Hammel Caruthers commented as he strolled over to the pompous governor. Hammel prided himself on finding excellent business opportunities and he didn’t concern himself with ethics or legalities. He was a businessman and had enough backing to ensure that, if there were any legal issues, his team of very expensive lawyers could get him out of any situation, no matter how sticky.

Mitchell turned, smiling when he recognized the wealthy billionaire. “I always have exciting opportunities, depending on the investor in question.”

Hammel rolled his eyes, struggling for patience. “Look Mitchell, I heard about the internet thing you’ve got going. From what I understand, you have the authority to nominate the members for the board of directors for the internet board, then your state’s senate will approve your nominees. Right now, you have two more appointees to put into place, then you’re moving forward with the plan.” He gestured towards a group of chairs set away from the other people that were still milling about at the late night party. More than half of the guests had left the yacht club. Some of them had gone off to their own yachts if they were moored in this exclusive marina. Others might have headed to another party, and some had simply gone home. Since it was just after one o’clock in the morning, Mitchell thought of the others as wimps. Most of the more interesting parties didn’t get started until around two o’clock, when the bars closed down.

Hammel might suspect about Mitchell’s very interesting party with five or six other people that were now waiting on his presence. A very exclusive party, he thought. A party in which the governor could do all the things that he craved with the men he craved.

Mitchell surveyed the handsome businessman, wondering what the billionaire’s preferences might be. Unfortunately, the man preferred the ladies. Pity.

However, if Hammel was interested in discussing business, Mitchell was more than happy to hang around to reel the man into the opportunity.

Both men sat heavily in the chairs set away from everyone else, providing a bit of privacy. They’d shucked their tuxedo jackets long ago and each had a drink in hand.

“So, what do you know?” Kevin asked, taking a sip of his bourbon.

Hammel shifted impatiently in his chair. “I know you’ve got the board of directors nearly set up. I know that you have already drafted legislation that would allow your internet company to…”

“I don’t have any stock in that internet company,” Kevin interrupted.

Hammel rolled his eyes. “Mitchell, we both know that you don’t need to own actual stock in the company to make a profit. So stop putzing with me.” He toyed with the crystal glass, clinking the ice cubes against the crystal. “I know this draft legislation will allow your internet buddies,” he continued, clarifying the situation, “to move in to certain areas and offer low cost internet, substantially beating out the competition.”

“There’s nothing illegal about it,” Kevin filled in during the silence.
