CHAPTER EIGHT

ILARIA WONDERED IF she’d ever get used to the finery, the sheer beauty of everything in Frediano’s world. The chalet was...well, she couldn’t use the term fairy tale because this was no fairy tale. It was a very opulent prison.

Without escape, apparently.

But as Frediano helped her down from the plane, and then into the car that would take them from airstrip to chalet, it was hard to feel that drumbeat of panic. In some ways, this secluded little hideaway felt like home. The mountains, the blue sky, the cool air. There was only a small staff waiting for them, so that it was almost like they were alone.

The chalet was beautiful and luxurious. The structure seemed to be made almost entirely of glass, with only the necessary wooden beams to hold it together. No doubt inside you could look anywhere and see the beautiful scenery of the Alps around them.

Everything she had decided this morning and on the flight here felt solidified somehow. Noemi saying she could be a role model had started it, but there had been something about looking out the plane window, the world below them like a miniature on display. It had been exhilarating, the closest to a bird she’d ever be. And in that simple joy of flying she’d decided that joy was within her power.

Even if little else was.

She would learn the etiquette. Even with as little education as she’d had, she knew that a woman needed to learn the rules in order to break them effectively.

Frediano had been trying to intimidate her earlier when he’d mentioned speaking to Vita and arranging improvements at the farm. He wanted her to feel as though he pulled all the strings. But he’d only given her an idea.

No doubt Roletto orphanages and workhouses needed the same kind of improvements her farm did. No doubt there were trusts and scholarships and whatever else to be created to benefit the orphans of Estraz and other disasters. She would work tirelessly to dedicate her life not to the palace or the King—whether that be Carlo or Frediano. She would dedicate her life to the people, just as she’d promised them on that balcony yesterday.

And because thinking of things she could do reminded her that she had some kind of power now, even if it wasn’t the freedom she’d hoped for, she was determined to get everything she wanted out of this week.

Frediano craved a biddable, boring wife. Perhaps part of her wanted to rebel at that as a matter of course, but she was smarter than that. Or perhaps she’d just never had the luxury to rebel.

The bottom line was, it did not matter what Frediano wanted. She didn’t mind appearing biddable and boring if it suited her purposes, because this wasn’t about thwarting him. He was a prince. Powerful and in line to be the King. There was no sense beating her head against the brick wall of trying to best him. He’d only change the rules and declare himself winner.
