Although the structures in Miroirs are much freer (Ravel’s expressed intention was to write music that appeared improvised), Noctuelles, Alborada del gracioso, and La vallée des cloches are primarily ternary in form. Gaspard de la nuit can be thought of in its entirety as a three-movement sonata: Allegro (“Ondine”), Adagio (“Le Gibet”), and a dazzling Finale (“Scarbo”). Combined with this underlying adherence to form, Ravel was free to experiment with his unique harmonies and irregular meters—all of which often masked the true structure of these works. It is critical to grasp the framework of each piece as a starting point so that you can approach these pieces in an organized manner.
