Safety Lever

As can best be determined, there are four different styles of safety levers employed on Bulgarian Makarovs. The earliest type, which are found on pistols dated from 1975 to 1978, have a narrow thumb stud with a small flat area on top where the hole drilled for the spring is found–an exact duplicate of the Soviet style. The sides are serrated horizontally. In 1978–82, the top of the safety appeared with a wider flat portion between the serrated sides. In 1981–84 the top of the safety had an even wider flat portion. After 1984 the thumb stud became even larger and the length of the horizontal serrations on the side followed suit. Since it takes some time to use up older parts, these dates are not exclusive. It may be inferred that the safety evolved into a style with a larger area for the thumb to engage. The internal shape of the spindle was never altered.
