Me: Set an extra spot.
Mom: I’m so glad Keely can make it, I haven’t seen her in so long!
I ignore it and get a shower. When I’m done, I head into the kitchen where Jace gives me a deer-in-the-headlights look as Achilles and Freya lick his finger excitedly.
“What?”
“I Googled it and it said chocolate was fine and they were staring at me so cutely, so I just let them have a little lick.”
“They’re spoiled. They can have treats.”
“Good,” he says.
“Do you need help?”
“Nope, I’m pretty much done.”
I watch him for a bit as he hurries about. It’s fun seeing him work since he definitely doesn’t look like much of a kitchen man. I find it oddly sexy with his sleeves rolled up, tattoos showing. I’m not sure my kitchen has ever been so messy, but as he pulls the brownies out, they smell delicious.
“I think I made a mess,” he says as he looks around. “Good thing we have to leave, and I don’t have to clean it up!”
I grin at him as I take the rats so I can put them away. “Ah, good thinking. I knew I liked you for more than your good looks.”
“Thank you.”
Once we’re ready, we head out to the car. The aroma of brownies quickly fills the interior as I drive the five minutes to my mom’s place, where I pull in behind Reba’s car.
“I didn’t tell them it was you coming. They think it’s my friend Keely.”
“Why?” he asks curiously.
“I don’t know. I didn’t want the questions, maybe? I was hoping they’d not ask them in front of you or something.”
“Alright.”
He follows me as I get out of the vehicle, holding the pan of brownies the entire time. As I start to walk up to the house, I look back at him. “Are you nervous?” I ask as butterflies wreak havoc in my stomach.
“Not at all. Are you?”
“Yeah.”
“It’ll be fine,” he assures me.
