Chapter Twenty-One

Over the next three days, Gretel spent time making some philters and potions and putting them to use while Jox wasn’t around. The part of him she didn’t trust didn’t need to know what she was up to.

She had her small coven working with a few of his demons. Not all of them trusted him, and all treated him cautiously. She was surprised, but they could obviously sense something not right with him as well. They were more allied to her at this moment than to Jox.

She wasn’t surprised by that. Even demons recognized strength.

She arrived home early to find Jox home, and a murmur of voices floated to her from the living room. Charlie, Jox’s favorite dark witch wasn’t on guard, but Nira was. Gretel slipped inside, being careful to avoid being heard.

“The attack is planned, but I think we should be careful not to repeat Galla’s mistakes.”

“I don’t plan to,” Jox said. “Besides, outbreaks of violence will only have my old friend on guard and give him and his people too many chances to engage my forces.”

“The familiarity will eliminate the element of surprise,” a feminine voice said. “So, stick to the plan.”

“The ones we have planned are necessary tools to accomplish our goals.”

“Make sure not more than two are planned,” the woman replied. “Has anyone located the hunter?”

“She was killed three days ago, but part of her team is still in the city,” a man said.

“Eliminate them,” Jox ordered. “Pol is just chomping at the bit to get those relics so he can beat me. I won’t have that. Not even this demon will best me despite what his bitch thinks.”

There was a round of laughter.

“I’m sure she’ll fight,” a masculine voice said. “Any sign that anything isn’t as it seems will spur her to action.”

“That is why everyone must continue to do their jobs as normal,” Jox said. “We’ll deal with Pol and his horde as soon as we secure this city. In the meantime, Cur prepare to summon Zaroth.”

Zaroth was a minor chaos demon with a wicked fire gift.

“Yes, milord.”

“I want him to take care of a small matter for me,” Jox said. “Now, it’s time for you all to leave. Gretel will be home soon. Teleport out, all of you.”

Gretel back-tracked and went in search of Nira. “Nira.”

“Yes, ma’am?” Nira came to attention on the front porch. Her brown eyes were watchful.

“I need you to take care of something for me,” she said.

“I’m at your service.”

Gretel smiled. “I’ll message you. Erase it right away. I don’t want to take unnecessary risks.” She pulled her phone from her purse and typed in the message.

“You’re home,” Jox said from behind her, and Gretel turned to look up at him.

“So, I am. What are you doing home early?”

“I thought I’d surprise you,” he said. “We’ll go out tonight.”

She grinned. “Let me change.” She stepped inside the house, keeping her anger tightly under control. Gretel could only guess at the game he was playing, but an alliance with Murlog was unacceptable.
