Dominic sat in his car and looked out the window at the house he’d parked in front of. A light glowed in the front room. He should start his car up and turn around. Go back home. He didn’t know why he hadn’t taken up his friends’ offer for a night out after his father’s funeral. They hadn’t suggested they go and get drunk, but a few drinks to commemorate the life of a man they all respected. Instead, he’d told them he wanted to be alone.

Only that wasn’t the truth either. From the moment he’d caught a glimpse of her as he left the cemetery, he’d wanted to touch her. Speak to her. It was insane and out of character for him to be drawn to her, but he couldn’t help it. He needed to see Gemma.

Grabbing the door handle and pushing out with more force than was necessary, Dominic stepped out of the car and walked up the path to Gemma’s house. He had no idea how she was going to react to seeing him. He could find the door slammed in his face. What he hoped happened would be her opening her arms to him and welcoming him into her house.

Dominic needed to feel alive again. Needed to feel like there was a reason for him to continue doing what he was doing.

Why was he acting like a blithering idiot? If Gemma turned him away, he’d go find someone else to warm his bed for the evening.

Raising his fist, he rapped on the door, two quick staccato beats. Everything was quiet behind the door, and he began to think Gemma might be out. Just because a light shone in her living room didn’t mean Gemma was home. He looked at his watch. It was after ten in the evening. In all likelihood she was tucked up in bed sleeping.

As he turned to head back to his car and find the nearest bar, the light above his head switched on. He blinked against the sudden onslaught of light.

“Who is it?” The words were muffled by the thick door he’d had installed to replace the one he’d broken.

He rested a hand against the wood. “It’s me, Dominic.”

The click of the lock being disengaged sounded, and then the door stood open. “What do you want?”

Not the kind of response he had been hoping for. More of the one he’d expected. He hadn’t contacted her after their date. He’d let her calls go to voicemail, knowing if he answered, the emotions he’d been battling would spill over and he’d act like a fool on the phone with her.

“I came to see you.”

“Why?”

Dominic stuck his hands in his pockets and tilted his head at the roof of the porch. He closed his eyes and breathed in and out. He then brought his head down and faced Gemma head on, knowing every single emotion was on display. He took a chance and hoped it paid off. “Because I need you.”

Gemma held out her hand.
