CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN: GLASGOW, OCTOBER 9TH, 8.00AM
The next morning saw John and Dougie arrive at the Stewart house, for want of a better description, looking a bit worse for wear, due to the excessive drinking the proceeding night. After all, they both reckoned they had nothing to lose, as they saw themselves as a couple of condemned men, so they decided to meet their fate still drunk, in the optimistic belief that it might make the final outcome more palatable.
As they entered the kitchen, Mary was standing next to a pot of freshly brewed coffee, with two cups sitting on the worktop next to her.
“Come on in boys, we need to speak but I also need you to be sober.” She took another long look at both men. “Well, I suppose soberish will have to do, so drink up.”
She continued to size up the two men as they drank their coffee. It was plainly obvious to her how much the fear of her husband had on them both men. It was also apparent by simply observing their agitated state, that they were finding it virtually impossible to relax, as they continuously scanned the room. Both men were suspicious and apprehensive of the meeting, simply because they expected Charlie to jump out and slit their throats at any moment.
“Good, just the way I want them, scared shitless,” she thought. “Right then, this is it. It’s now or never.”
Mary topped up their coffees and pulled out two chairs and indicated that they should sit down at the table. She moved round to the other side and sat facing them.
“Right lads, I need you to focus, so eyes front. Now listen to what I have to say because I believe all our lives may depend on it.” She hesitated for second to let her statement sink in. “When and it will be when, Charlie eventually decides to comes home from whatever bolthole he’s hiding in, well I don’t expect he will be in the best of moods. For a start, he’s going to be that pissed off at both of you for failing to protect him, in what he will call his called hour of need, so he’ll more than likely shoot you dead, right where you’re standing. You see boys, in his eyes you’ll have failed him, just a couple of losers, who he can no longer trust.”
Dougie groaned, while John started to object saying it wasn’t their fault. Mary waved them quiet and continued,
“Boys, it’s time we all faced up to the facts and they are that right now, we are, all three of us, living on borrowed time and yes, I have include myself in there as well. So as they say, desperate times call for desperate measures and giving our position, I have come to the conclusion that the only way out of our possibly terminal situation is… that we have to kill Charlie first, before he kills us. It’s really quite simple when you think about it, we kill him or he kills us.
