Monster-A-Go-Go is a different breed of Herschell Gordon Lewis film, in that it is not really a Herschell Gordon Lewis film at all. The film was begun by filmmaker Bill Rebane, who also helmed 1975’s The Giant Spider Invasion. Rebane worked on the film for more than two years. However, he eventually ran out of funds and had to shut down production. His film was then seized by the laboratory when Rebane was unable to pay for its processing.

Enter Herschell Gordon Lewis. Hoping to edit it into a coherent film he could use as the second part of a double bill with his own Moonshine Mountain, Lewis purchased Rebane’s film. However, Lewis soon found that he could not edit the existing footage into a film that made any sort of sense. He then shot new footage and added narration, making something completely different out of Rebane’s film.

The resulting film is crude, but ultimately did what it was intended to do. Lewis takes no credit for the film, and has never considered it one of his own. Because it is often (erroneously) credited as being a Herschell Gordon Lewis film, the filmmaker discusses the misguided film’s bastardly creation here.
