In the regression from I to II, the girl accepts the classically “feminine” position—passivity and masochism—only by succumbing entirely to a transgressive, incestuous desire. This position can only be realized in the space of the unconscious, which, ruled by the pleasure principle and ungoverned by the principle of noncontradiction, can render an incestuous desire (genital love) and its punishment (beating) as equivalent.

The repressed (unconscious) phantasy of the male and female patients is the same. The transition to the third, conscious stage begins to differentiate the content and the structure of the phantasy by submitting the subjects in question to a social authority demanding that their desires be articulated differently.
