Chapter Ten
Sitting in a room teeming with black mold would’ve been a gift compared to opening her eyes to the brightness of the new day. Faith’s head pounded, as if someone had taken a nutcracker to it, not once, but repeatedly. If she turned to the right or left, the pain worsened. So, she lay, still in her dress and sandals, on top of the unmade bed and tried not to move. The sound of clanking pots and pans from the kitchen below sounded like a firing squad had moved in and practiced hitting their metallic targets.
Each clank caused her to stiffen.
She peeled her eyes open and squinted at the sun. Her stomach rolled along with her head. Then, memories of her disastrous night emerged like a devil, pointing its ugly fingers at her and laughing. Not a pleasant cajoling. No, a deep, guttural laugh. The kind that lifted the little hairs. She remembered the tears rolling down her cheeks. Then, she recalled begging Candace to pull off to the side of the street so she could throw up.
Faith rolled over and waited for the nausea to catch up.
Who accepts a playful offer on a date and ends up needing to be carried back to the car? By her armpits, no less.
Mortified, Faith buried her head under a pillow.
She had done some pretty stupid things in life, but nothing left her with that kind of dread. How would she face Candace?
Eventually, Faith managed to climb out of bed and go to the bathroom. When she returned, she glanced out the window at her daughter walking her bike up and down the driveway. Bristol feared not being able to stop the bike, so she walked it instead. She was such a delightful and peculiar child. Afraid of so much, but willing to at least face it with some action, be it body language for speaking or walking her bike for thrills.
As long as she had Bristol everything would be okay in the world. Bristol was her life. Faith needed no one else. Eventually, with enough time to buffer the bad luck in her life, she could get through anything.
She had great purpose with Bristol. She would dote on her the way she deserved, always being there when it mattered most. Like when she would finally, one day, mount that bike seat and pedal her feet far away from whatever turmoil led her to walk it in the first place. She would help her daughter be brave and strong.
She would focus on Bristol and erase the grime left behind from all the years she wasted trying to fit the mold of a happy wife. That would help reengage her in a search for a stable profession instead of the unpredictable world of hairdressing so late in the game. She would stop the nonsense of pursuing dates with women like Candace, too. From then on, she’d live a balanced, healthy life complete with a healthy glow and firm butt cheeks.
Yeah, right. Maybe when she won the lottery or ended up on Ellen’s Twelve Days of Christmas.
