Chapter 16
Sophie brushed out her flattened helmet hair as she prepared for bed. Another night and not a word or a mind tap from Murdoch. What was going on in his head? Was his family telling him not to contact her? Was he being pressured to keep her at a distance? Regardless, Sophie was over it. If that's how he was going to play the game, so be it, she fumed. There was plenty of fish in the sea, but she'd just like confirmation this fish was off her hook, so to speak. Sophie wondered if he would now be a Raven in the true sense of the word â her enemy.
She climbed into bed and tried not to think. Too tired to read but buoyed from her night with Nikolas, she lay willing herself to sleep, feeling the comforting presence of Bette Davis at the end of her bed and hearing her soft snuffling. It had been a fun night and a while since she could recall having a night out with a friend. Even though she wasn't looking for love with her protector, Sophie had to admit it was a romantic night and if she had been open to Nikolas as a lover, she'd probably be swooning. She smiled at her choice of word â swooning â so Elsopeth.
She closed her eyes and exhaled. And waited. A while longer... a half hour, forty-five minutes.
Don't look at the clock. Stop thinking.
Branches scratched at her window, and she thought of Heathcliff opening the window and calling on the deceased Catherine to come in, haunt him, and drive him mad. Another sound, the Raven tap, tap, tapping?
Stop thinking.
What are you doing, Murdoch? Do you miss me as I miss you? Thank you, Nikolas, for giving me a night off from the drama. Where are you, Hope Yardley? Your family is in agony. Aagh!
She surrendered, knowing sleep would not win with the thoughts swirling around in her head. Rising, Sophie left Bette Davis curled up at the end of the bed and went down to the library in her pyjama shorts and matching T-shirt. She always felt a bit pretentious calling it the library â it was Aunt Daphne's favourite room with journals and books on mahogany shelves that reached to the ceiling and beautiful old dimpled leather chairs looking towards the garden or the fireplace that was never lit because the weather did not dictate it. At night, it felt a little eerie â the books were all that remained of the lives that had gone before.
Thanks to Bette Davis, Sophie had previously discovered three precious books â one of them being a journal written by Elsopeth â all hidden with false covers. Maybe Aunt Daphne was worried they would be confiscated and put in the Lens's library, so she hid them. Sadly with her great aunt gone, Sophie would never know. Tonight, she was on a mission to learn more about her powers.
Pulling the small step ladder into place, she climbed up to where she had left the three volumes safely out of reach on the top shelf.
