CHAPTER TEN
âHOLIDAYS?â ELIAS ECHOED, assuming a perplexed air. âWhat are these âholidaysâ you speak of?â
She giggled again and he couldnât resist kissing her. But when he lifted his head and gazed down at her he realised she was right. He couldnât remember the last time heâd bothered to take a sustained break from work. But why would he? Work was energy and excitement. He liked moving from one project to the next without time to take a breathâit was breath to him. But Darcie thought that he was worse than she was, which meant sheâd take a break if she could. Heâd been so very blind when it came to her. And in so many ways.
âIn all this time working for me youâve not taken any time off,â he mused. âI probably should have been sued by an employeeâs federation or something. Iâm pretty sure itâs been illegal.â
âIt was a privately negotiated contract,â she said valiantly. âI wanted to work.â
Wanted to or had to? Because there was a difference. And he didnât like thinking of her having to. Nor did he like her trying to make him feel better about it. âDoesnât make it okay, though. When did you last have a holiday?â
She dropped her gaze. âSchool holidays.â
Well, that was a while ago. And also not true. âYou worked all of them,â he said. âFrom your mid-teens you took whatever job you couldâfast-food outlets, then data entry. Once you got your first job you never had a break. I rechecked your agency CV on the flight to Vegas.â
Her gaze shot back to his. âYou did? Why?â
âBecause I realised that despite working alongside you for almost three years, I barely know anything substantial about you.â
She swallowed. âYou couldâve just asked me.â
âAnd youâd answer properly?â He watched her with wry amusement, feeling an odd ache in his chest at the same time. âYouâre reticent about anything personal.â And now he just wondered all the more about her background. He had the horrible feeling sheâd been very lonely. âThat was understandable in our working relationship, but now weâre married...â
Her blue eyes turned intense. âWell, you donât exactly offer up much personal, either.â
True. âPerhaps itâs a âwork onâ for us both. Letâs trade.â He leaned back. âYou go first. Tell me, have you ever really travelled?â
âFrequently.â She shot him an impish grin. âIâm very used to your private jet and still appreciate it, every time. Thanks to you Iâve seen the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum in Rome, even the Hollywood sign in LA.â
âThose were literally fly-bys and not for recreational purposes.â He fiddled with the edge of the sheet, wary about asking too much too soon and uncertain as to why he suddenly wanted to know so badly. âYou never went on holiday with your foster family?â
Her expression instantly shuttered. âIt wasnât something many of them could afford.â
How many foster families had she been placed with?
âBut you can afford it, yet you donât go on holiday either.â She deflected the focus back to him.
And yes, she had him there.
