Magnolia sinensis (syn. M. sieboldii subsp. sinensis) A deciduous tree or shrub with a spreading habit that grows to 20ft (6m) tall, Magnolia sinensis is native to China where it grows in scrubby forests at high altitudes.The broadly obovate leaves are bright green, up to 6in (15cm) long. The white flowers appear in June and are saucer-shaped, to about 5in (12cm) across. Tolerates chalky soils. Hardy to 0°F (−18°C), US zones 7–10.

Magnolia stellata This deciduous species is smaller than the two mentioned earlier, usually making a bush no more than 15ft (4.5m) tall after many years. It is native to Japan where it grows in woods in the mountains, flowering in late March or April. The young bark is aromatic. Magnolia stellata is wonderfully free-flowering from an early age; the scented, pure white flowers with their strap-shaped petals appearing on almost every branch. The one drawback is that they are easily spoilt by frost, wind or rain. There are several different named cultivars of this species, some with pale pink flowers. Hardy to 0°F (−18°C), US zones 7–10.
